HOW TO CHARTER A FLATS BOAT FROM KEY WEST, FLORIDA, IN LESS THAN 3 MINUTES.
Flats fishing in the Florida Keys takes place in the shallows and inlets of the Keys' famous "back-country". Its diverse ecology includes, but is not limited to: mangrove clusters, sand bars, turtle grass and more.
It has been said that Florida Keys flats fishing can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences you can have on the water. Anglers typically either drift fish or sight-cast using fly or spin tackle.
The types of fish typically caught during Key West flats fishing trips include:
Bonefish- also known as "Ghost Fish" since they can be so difficult to spot.
Permit- a fun fish to hunt. Can be caught with either fly or spin tackle.
Tarpon- arguably the most famous fish in the Florida Keys. Highly sought after by visiting anglers, they are referred to as "Silver Kings" and have been known to weigh over 200 lbs. The record for the largest tarpon ever caught was right here in Key West and weighed in at 243lbs.
Other Flats Fish: snapper, trout and jacks are commonly caught in the flats. Shark fishing is also available.
Your typical Key West flats fishing boat usually only has room for two anglers. A third can sometimes be added, but is less than ideal and may limit your ability to fish certain areas.
